Given the potential for this report to impact on rural development, this website should stimulate discussion on its findings. Can rural Ireland survive such an onslaught, is it necessary from a national perspective, or should we be examining methods of creating self-sufficency in rural Ireland.

feel like i am talking to myself here, one method of stimulating growth in rural areas, remember indogenous and exogenous and all that, is to set up local currencies, this if properly managed would have the potential to keep wealth in a local economy and prevent leakage.
A start can be made in a local town with participating outlets and after a year extended to the rural hinterland.
It has been tried (in Ireland) and it does work. In parts of Latin America where the national currency collapsed, the locals in rural areas set up their own currencies and it was so successful that when the natrional currency recovered, they said no thanks we prfer our own currency.
If and when we get over this NAMA thing we will still be faced with peak oil and degrowth. Wouldnt it be great to have an alternative system in place to deal with that scenario.
