If you’re keen to work in rural development for the public or voluntary sectors, or in LEADER projects, this course is ideal.

“The distance learning course enables students to study from home making higher education accessible for those with full time jobs or living far from universities as well as for those who want to try to obtain an international degree without leaving their country”. Miroslava Cekovic, second year student

Rural development is of growing importance within the reformed Common Agricultural Policy, and the recent expansion of the European Union creates an even greater demand for rural development practitioners.

Graduates will be capable of acting in key roles to guide and shape development opportunities in rural Europe.

The integrated inter-disciplinary course combines the theoretical context of the dynamics of rural change, with more practical approaches to the delivery and management of change through project and partnership-based action.

The course design and delivery emphasises the scope for shared learning, and students are brought together through a pre-sessional residential induction weekend. Residential sessions take place in different parts of Europe, which provide opportunities for staff and students to meet each other, and to apply learning to different economic, social and cultural situations.

This course is delivered with the Countryside and Community Research Institute.
